MagicCon: Barcelona Reveals Cards, Art for Doctor Who, Wilds of Eldraine Sets
In addition, sneak peek of art from Lost Caverns of Ixalan shown to fans
Barcelona, Spain, July 31, 2023 – The MagicCon Experience arrived in Barcelona and welcomed fans to an exciting weekend of panels and events on the Main Stage, including first looks at upcoming some fantastic upcoming sets.
The event was held at the Fira Barcelona Gran Via, and the reveals started out on day 1. The Preview Panel brought together host Gavin Verhey with panelist Mark Rosewater and Ovidio Cartagena to show off art and cards from Doctor Who, Wilds of Eldraine, and an early sneak peek at the Lost Caverns of Ixalan sets.
MAGIC: THE GATHERING – DOCTOR WHO™ (to be released on Oct. 13)
Our upcoming Universes Beyond set, Magic: The Gathering® – Doctor Who™ features four preconstructed Commander decks, covering 60 years of that iconic franchise and allowing players to relive their favorite moments from the show and create their own special memories.
These decks have been built from the top down to capture the fun and flavor of Doctor Who’s iconic characters and memorable stories. The TARDIS Showcase frame treatment and exciting serialized Doctor cards available in Collector Boosters add a whole new layer of collectability for the biggest Doctor Who fans in the universe.
- The “Blast from the Past” deck captures the earliest history of Doctor Who with the first eight Doctors. It’s built around the historic mechanic and is helmed by The Fourth Doctor. Covering the show from 1963-1989, this deck features lots of legendary creatures, objects, and stories.
- The “Timey-Wimey” deck is built around temporal manipulation and headlined by the Tenth Doctor. Using suspend, vanishing, and other time-counter cards, the time travel mechanic allows you to tinker with the time flow by adding or removing time counters from your cards.
- The “Paradox Power” deck is built around the unexpected. Who knows what will happen! Flashback, rebound, suspend, retrace, and others, the paradox mechanic does special things when you cast your spells from outside your hand.
- The “Masters of Evil” deck is built around forcing your enemies to choose the lesser evil. Focused on Daleks, Masters, and Cybermen, the villainous choice mechanic forces each of your opponents to either sacrifice a creature or let you create a 3/3 Dalek token with menace. So devious!
The TARDIS is included in each Doctor Who deck, except the Masters of Evil deck, and creates some truly wonderful and surprising moments. Collector Boosters will be the only way to open the flashiest, most unique, most exciting versions of these Doctor Who characters, and Serialized Doctor cards are limited to extremely low quantities tied to the Doctor featured on each card with a minimum of 501 cards of each.
WILDS OF ELDRAINE (to be released Sept. 8)
Our return to the land of fairy tales and fantasy, Wilds of Eldraine will provide a twist on the whimsy by venturing beyond the castle walls and into the wilds. A mysterious and vast expanse of wilderness full of mischievous faeries, witches with bubbling cauldrons, and giants loom above the tree line.
This will be the first chance to see what the Multiverse looks like after the failed Phyrexian invasion. Players will get to encounter new and familiar faces throughout Eldraine as they deal with the aftermath of the invasion, including the destruction caused by the Phyrexians and the unforeseen consequences of the resistance efforts.
Wilds of Eldraine opens with the plane in the grip of The Wicked Slumber, a sleeping curse placed on the plane by the fairy monarch, Talion, and three powerful witch sisters. Originally meant to combat the Phyrexians, the sleeping enchantment has driven many of Eldraine’s denizens into a deep sleep from which no one can wake.
We have amazing fairytale inspired characters as well as art inspired by classic fairytale storybooks for our booster fun. We are also doing something extra special for the enchanting world of Wilds of Eldraine with Enchanting Tales, bringing the top enchantments in Magic’s history into Eldraine.
LOST CAVERNS OF IXALAN (to be released Nov. 17)
Fans at MagicCon: Barcelona also got to see early art commissioned for Lost Caverns of Ixalan, featuring some characters and dino beasts that will be featured in the upcoming set. More information about this adventurous set will be revealed at MagicCon: Vegas, which will be held Sept. 22-24.
